Brent Clowater – Artist Biography
Originally from Fredericton, New Brunswick, Brent Clowater is a graduate of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. At NBCCD, he was exposed to a variety of art making practices and mediums, with his predominant disciplines being Design, painting and photography.
In 2003, at the age of 21, Brent left the Maritimes and headed to British Columbia with a backpack, a skateboard, and aspirations of joining the burgeoning art scene out West. He quickly found a home in Vancouver, where art was deeply embedded in a counterculture that felt both welcoming and alive with creativity.
Over the next decade, Brent focused primarily on painting and graphic design. He became a well recognized figure in Vancouver’s contemporary art community, exhibiting his work in many of the city’s most prominent and popular galleries. He was a founding member of East Van’s legendary ACME Studios and was close peers with some of the city’s most renowned creatives.
As time passed, Brent’s style evolved. He experimented with various mediums, drawing inspiration from both street art and classical painting, never content to stay in one lane. Despite this ongoing evolution, his work maintains consistent threads. Endlessly curious by nature, Brent paints from life using bold colours to convey energy and emotion. His work draws from street photography, pulling viewers into the scene and evoking deep feelings of nostalgia.
In 2007, Brent met SFX makeup student Michelle Werner, and the two formed an enduring relationship and creative partnership. In 2018, they relocated to Calgary to be closer to family, where they now work on creative projects from their home studio.
For over 25 years, Brent has pursued creative endeavours with many notable achievements. Along the way, he has connected with a number of supportive patrons who have acquired his pieces for their private collections. A prolific and experienced artist, Brent paints with confidence, knowing that if a piece convey’s the right energy, it will inevitably find its home.
